The Statue of Liberty was originally a reddish-brown color, due to the natural oxidation of the copper skin. Over time, the statue has changed colors several times. In 1986, it was painted with a special green patina to protect it from further corrosion. The green color is now iconic and is often referred to as “Liberty Green” or “Statue Green”. In 2010, the statue underwent a major restoration project which included repainting its exterior in its original reddish-brown hue.
