VOLUME 1 is a complete and detailed hands-on video portrait of the anatomy, care and running of the Iron Horse and is presented by engineer Charles Daigh and fireman Tom Scott, Jr. on a full scale steam locomotive. Using a Baldwin 0-4-0 engine, the viewer starts out just like an apprentice crew member in the heyday of steam: working on a yard engine and learning all the basics of the science of steam locomotive operation. VOLUME 2 is a very close look at the work of three veteran steam engine crew running passenger locomotives, and following steam locomotive evolution from the turn of the century to the end of the era of steam. Start out on a Nevada Northern Ten Wheeler #40, journeying into the copper mining country above Ely, Nevada. Next spend a day with the crew of the Southern Pacific's Pacific #2472, and finish the rail exploration in the cab of Union Pacific's Northern #844. In VOLUME 3 join the crews of three different freight locomotives. Begin on Shay #1 of the Roaring Camp and Big Trees Narrow Gauge. Watch as this engine powers up the 8-1/2% grade of Bear Mountain. Next is Mikado #19, hauling freight on the Yreka Western line for the first time in 35 years. Lastly learn the handling of the awesome Class "A" #1218, built by the Norfolk and Western in 1945.
